The United States is seeking more access to Philippines ports and airfields to re-fuel and service its warships and planes, diplomatic and military sources said on Thursday, expanding its presence at a time of tension with China in the South China Sea. But it is not trying to reopen military bases there. Washington's growing cooperation in the Philippines, a U.S. ally which voted to remove huge American naval and air bases 20 years ago, follows the U.S. announcement last year of plans to set up a Marine base in northern Australia and possibly station warships in Singapore. It also coincides with diplomatic and military friction in the South China Sea and its oil-rich Spratly Islands, which are subject to disputed claims by China, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations. The Supreme Court on Thursday voted 8-5 to temporarily stop the Senate impeachment court from revealing the details of Chief Justice Renato Corona's foreign currency bank accounts, Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez announced at a press briefing. Marquez, who is also the Supreme Court spokesman, said Corona inhibited from the voting, which was presided over by SC Associate Justice Antonio Carpio.

Senator Miriam Defensor- Santiago said that they might be experiencing an authentic constitutional crisis. Others also said that the Supreme Court (SC) should stop meddling about the impeachment trial since it is already the Congress who is at hold of it. The camp of impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to stop the ongoing impeachment trial as it accused the Senate, sitting as the impeachment court, of grave abuse of discretion. In a petition for certiorari filed with a prayer for the issuance of a temporary restraining order and writ of injunction filed with the high court Wednesday, Corona’s lawyers also asked for the nullification of the impeachment complaint against him for allegedly being defective. They also sought the inhibition of Associate Justices Antonio Carpio and Maria Lourdes Sereno from the deliberations because they are perceived to be vying for the chief justice post. Grace Lee is silent whenever she is asked about if she and President Noynoy Aquino have plans this Valentine’s Day. Grace Lee also added that she already has divulged the enough message the public wants to know. But for now, she wants that they plan to be private. She also added that they will not be dating this birthday of the president. Aside from the local media networks who is following Grace, is a big media network in Korea. The Koreans have been intrigued by her as a person because and her life here in the Philippines. Retired Army general Jovito Palparan, wanted for a kidnapping case, has no plans of surrendering even after repeated appeals from Malacañang and the manhunt operation launched by communist rebels. In a statement issued through his lawyer, Palparan maintained that he is innocent of the charges being leveled against him regarding the disappearance of two University of the Philippines students in 2006. While the Malacanan Palace urges Palparan to surrender since the New Peoples Army (NPA) is already in search for him. Meanwhile, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jesse Robredo said that they already junked the suggestion to give out a shoot to kill order for Palparan. The under secretary said that Palparan should be caught alive to answer the allegations in Bulacan regarding the los of the two students in the University of the Philippines. The camp of Chief Justice Renato Corona on Tuesday formally opposed the Senate impeachment court's decision allowing his bank records to be subpoenaed to the proceedings. In a seven-page motion, Corona’s counsel said the documents should be deemed "inadmissible and irrelevant" to the proceedings. The defense also noted that the Senate had earlier ruled that no evidence should be presented in connection with Paragraph 2.4 of Article II of the impeachment complaint, which is about Corona’s alleged ill-gotten wealth. Less than two months after the House of Representatives impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona, the House committee on justice on Tuesday found sufficient grounds to seek the impeachment of another member of the high court: Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo. The panel agreed to proceed with the investigation of Del Castillo, who allegedly plagiarized the work of foreign authors when he wrote his decision on the case of sexual slavery victims — commonly known as “comfort women" — during the Japanese occupation in the 1940s.

The death toll in the magnitude-6.9 quake recorded in the Visayas on Monday morning climbed to seven in the afternoon, even as authorities lifted the tsunami alert it earlier raised following the quake. The alert was lifted "after an extended period of two hours," the Official Gazette said on its Twitter account, quoting Phivolcs.
