A magnitude of 6.9 was felt in the areas of Cebu City and Negros. There was a tsunami alert but later on the alert was lifted at around 2pm. The people panicked in Cebu City when a tsunami text scare was circulating around. People were running in the streets. Some of the people in the malls went rushing outside the malls. At least 43 people died in Negros Oriental following a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the province Monday, an Army official said. Twenty-nine died in a landslide in Moog, Barangay Planas in Guihulngan City, and 10 other died in other parts of the city, according to Col. Francisco Patrimonio, commander of the Army's 302nd Brigade. He said they are still trying to determine the exact number of people injured by the quake and landslide. Two people died in Tayasan town, one was killed in Bindoy, and another one died in Jimalalod, all in Negros Oriental, Patrimonio said. Iloilo City Mayor Jed Mabilog on Monday suspended all work and classes in the city after a magnitude 6.9 quake struck the region before noon. Mabilog said the quake was felt at Intensity 5 in the city, followed by several aftershocks. Strong aftershocks struck Negros Oriental and parts of the Visayas on Monday after a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit the area just before noon. The strongest aftershock, which registered 6.2 on the readings of the United States Geological Survey, hit at 6:10 p.m. in an area 60 kilometers north-northeast of of Dumaguete City. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed the initial report of the aftershock and warned the public to be on guard for more tremors. Brazilian beauty queen Priscilla Mereilles gave birth to a baby girl early on Monday, according to her husband actor-host John Estrada. In a text message to ABS-CBN News reporter Ginger Conejero, Estrada said Mereilles gave birth at 12:29 a.m. on Monday.
